The Desert Split Open Mic is a monthly spoken-word open mic in Joshua Tree, CA. We’re focused on poetry and short prose that is intersectionally feminist, queer, or in other ways radical. This is a place to say the things you’re discouraged from saying in more polite, or fearful, company. This is a place for those of us who know: polite silence is not an option anymore.
Inclusivity, more than anything, is our guiding principle. We hold space for the most difficult subject matter and consciously center marginalized voices. We encourage work that is vulnerable and messy and in progress, like each one of us. Everyone is invited to read—for 8 minutes max. You can read your own work or a favorite writer’s. You’re also welcome to just be here and listen.
We meet from 5-7 PM on the second Tuesday of each month. Now at Arttrap: 61961 Sunburst Circle, Joshua Tree, CA 92252. Refreshments available. $2 suggested donation. Please join us. We’re listening.
